چکیده

This paper describes the accidental poisoning of five workers by cadmium fume. The men were dismantling a frame of girders in a confined space by cutting bolts with an oxyacetylene burner. They were unaware at the time that the bolts were cadmium-plated or that this presented a serious industrial hazard. The paper sets out to give an appreciation of acute cadmium poisoning, the characteristics and uses of cadmium, and a review of the literature. The clinical picture of these cases is described, with the pathology of the fatal case which showed severe pulmonary oedema, alveolar metaplasia of the lung, and bilateral cortical necrosis of the kidneys. The lungs contained 0o25 g. cadmium oxide (CdO) per I00 g. wet specimen. An attempted estimation of the fatal dose of CdO fume is made. From the post-mortem findings, using

Acute cadmium poisoning in a foreman plater welder.

Poisoning from exposure to fresh cadmium fumes at work has long been described but cases may remain undiagnosed. The diagnosis of acute cadmium poisoning should be considered in any workman who has been occupied in high temperature welding in confined spaces. Surfaces electroplated with cadmium may go unrecognised and present a significant hazard. Freshly formed cadmium oxide fumes may cause pu...

A follow-up study of men exposed to cadmium oxide fume.

The results of a follow-up study of 100 men first examined in 1953 after exposure to cadmium oxide fume are presented and discussed. In 1953 there were 19 cases of chronic cadmium poisoning amongst these men. Twenty-four new cases are now described. The first signs of chronic cadmium poisoning could be seen after a latent interval after exposure had ended. Respiratory function tests showed a gr...

Chemical and histological post-mortem studies on a workman exposed for many years to cadmium oxide fume.

Post-mortem examinations of workers who died of cadmium poisoning after exposure to cadmium oxide fume have been reported by Baader (1951), Lane and Campbell (1954), and Bonnell (1955). Friberg (1950) and Friberg and Nystr6m (1952) reported similar examinations of workmen subjected to cadmium oxide dust. As part of a study of cadmium intoxication it was important to establish the distribution o...
